Getting More Out of Netflix Than You Think

Most people open Netflix, scroll for ten minutes, and settle on something they've already seen. But buried beneath the surface, Netflix is packed with features that most subscribers never discover. Here are ten worth knowing about right now.

1. Secret Genre Codes

Netflix organizes its library into hyper-specific categories that never appear in the standard menus. You can access them by navigating to netflix.com/browse/genre/[code]. For example, code 8711 unlocks "Mind-Bending Movies," while 6839 gives you "Political Dramas." A quick search for "Netflix secret codes" will turn up community-maintained lists covering hundreds of genres.

2. Adjustable Playback Speed

Want to power through a slow episode or rewatch dialogue more carefully? Netflix lets you change playback speed between 0.5x and 1.5x on most browsers and Android devices. Look for the speed icon in the playback controls during any title.

3. Download for Offline Viewing

This one sounds obvious, but many subscribers forget it exists. On the mobile app, tap the download icon on any compatible title. Downloads are stored locally and don't count against your stream limit. Perfect for flights, commutes, or patchy Wi-Fi zones.

4. Smart Downloads

Even better than manual downloads — enable Smart Downloads in your app settings and Netflix will automatically delete watched episodes and download the next one in a series whenever you're on Wi-Fi. Set it and forget it.

5. Manage Your "Continue Watching" Row

That half-watched documentary you started on a whim can follow you forever — unless you remove it. Hover over (or long-press) any title in your Continue Watching row and select Remove from Row. Your feed, your rules.

6. Two Thumbs Up

Netflix uses a single thumbs-up/down rating system, but there's also a double thumbs up option for titles you absolutely love. Using it helps Netflix's algorithm recommend content that truly matches your taste rather than just titles vaguely similar to things you've watched.

7. Audio & Subtitle Controls Mid-Playback

During any title, click the speech bubble or "Audio & Subtitles" button to switch languages on the fly. This is great for language learners who want to watch content in a foreign language with subtitles in their native tongue — or vice versa.

8. Screen Lock on Mobile

The Netflix mobile app includes a screen lock feature that prevents accidental pauses or skips when watching while lying down. Look for the padlock icon in the playback controls.

9. Disable Autoplay Previews

Those loud auto-playing trailers the moment you hover on a title? You can turn them off. Go to Account → Manage Profiles → your profile and uncheck "Autoplay previews while browsing." Silence, at last.

10. Netflix Top 10 Lists

Netflix publishes weekly Top 10 lists by country at their official Top 10 site (top10.netflix.com). It's the fastest way to see what's trending globally or in your region without scrolling through the app. Great for finding buzzworthy content you might have missed.

Make the Most of What You're Already Paying For

These features won't cost you anything extra — they're already included in your subscription. A few minutes spent exploring them can make the difference between a mediocre browsing experience and one that actually feels tailored to you.
