Most people open Netflix, scroll for ten minutes, and settle on something they've already seen. But buried beneath the surface, Netflix is packed with features that most subscribers never discover. Here are ten worth knowing about right now.
1. Secret Genre Codes
Netflix organizes its library into hyper-specific categories that never appear in the standard menus. You can access them by navigating to netflix.com/browse/genre/[code]. For example, code 8711 unlocks "Mind-Bending Movies," while 6839 gives you "Political Dramas." A quick search for "Netflix secret codes" will turn up community-maintained lists covering hundreds of genres.
2. Adjustable Playback Speed
Want to power through a slow episode or rewatch dialogue more carefully? Netflix lets you change playback speed between 0.5x and 1.5x on most browsers and Android devices. Look for the speed icon in the playback controls during any title.
3. Download for Offline Viewing
This one sounds obvious, but many subscribers forget it exists. On the mobile app, tap the download icon on any compatible title. Downloads are stored locally and don't count against your stream limit. Perfect for flights, commutes, or patchy Wi-Fi zones.
